Canberra recruit Junior Paulo is making the most of a new lease of life, having left an NRL club seemingly no chance of playing finals footy for one on the brink of the top four.

The former Parramatta prop made an earlier-than-expected debut for the Raiders in Friday's 30-18 win over Manly, less than a week after departing the scandal-hit Eels amid controversy.

"It's hard to deal with coming from a club like that, but I'm just grateful I've got an opportunity down here in Canberra to get my headspace right away from Sydney - there was a lot going on," he said on Monday.
